Scholarship Description
The Faculty of Law at the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) offers the Quentin Bryce Law Doctoral (QBLD) scholarships for commencing Doctor of Philosophy students to promote and reward quality research within the faculty.

A Quentin Bryce Law Doctoral Scholarship will enable you to undertake your PhD in a faculty which has a dynamic and vibrant research culture and to work with nationally and internationally recognised academic supervisors.

Eligible applicants are encouraged to commence applications for the Spring 2017 intake of the 2017/18 academic session.

Eligibility
The scholarships are open to domestic Australian and foreign international students. It is expected that scholarship holders will be full-time students, but the scholarship may be awarded to part-time students in specified circumstances.

Applicants must have completed a Masters Degree by research or a Bachelor Degree with first class honours, or be regarded by the University as having an equivalent level of attainment.

Selection process/criteria:
Scholarships will be awarded according to the following selection criteria:

• academic merit of the applicant;
• research and other relevant experience of the applicant;
• publication record of the applicant;
• quality of the research proposal; and,
• relevance of the proposed research to the Faculty's research strengths.

Fields of study
UTS: Law has an expanding research degree program. Research students will be supported by the UTS Framework for Doctoral Education with its focus on researcher support and development.

Researchers in UTS: Law are working in fields which have the potential for real-world impact and change. The research is innovative and uses interdisciplinary, socio-legal, theoretical, and doctrinal approaches to address the research questions. Regulation of biomedical technologies, refugee law, family and relationship law, new media and communications regulation, law and culture, and legal history are just some examples of the richness of the research being undertaken at UTS:Law.

Sponsorship duration
Whole duration of the program - 4 years

Scholarship benefits
The award value will include: 

• $40,000 per year per full-time student for 4 years
• $1,500 per year research support fund per student
• Paid holiday, sick, maternity, and parenting leave
• Possibility of appointment as a Doctoral Teaching Fellow ($25,000 per year)

Separate support may be available for international students to cover tuition fees.

Doctoral Teaching Fellowship:
Successful scholarship applicants may also be offered a Doctoral Teaching Fellowship which will provide an opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience in the Faculty of Law.

Doctoral Teaching Fellows will receive a salary of $25,000 per annum in addition to the QBLD scholarship, and be expected to teach 4 hours per week in both Autumn and Spring semesters.

Fellows will be appointed for a period of 12 months with an expectation that the Fellowship will be re-offered for two further 12 month periods, up to a maximum of 3 years.

Potential Quentin Bryce Scholarship applicants must first complete the faculty's mandatory pre-assessment process to determine eligibility for the PhD program. Please see the pre-assessment information here. Please note that applicants must have completed pre-assessment and a formal application to the Graduate Research School by the appropriate deadline for their QBS application to be valid.

DEADLINES:
There are usually two annual application cycles each year: Spring and Autumn.

Scholarship application deadline for Spring 2017 is 31 March 2017 (for International applicants) and 31 May 2017 (for Domestic Australian applicants). While deadline for Autumn 2018 is on 30 September 2017 (for International applicants) and 31 October 2017 (for Domestic Australian applicants).
