Scholarship Description
The Center for the Study of Law and Society (CSLS) fosters empirical research and theoretical analysis concerning legal institutions, legal processes, legal change, and the social consequences of law. 

Closely linked to the School of Law, CSLS creates a multidisciplinary milieu with a faculty of distinguished socio-legal scholars in sociology of lawpolitical sciencecriminal justice studieslaw and economicslegal historylaw and psychology, and legal and social philosophy, along with visiting socio-legal scholars from the United States and around the world.

Berkeley Law is able to accommodate a limited number of visiting scholars each year to engage in significant independent legal research projects. The Center for the Study of Law and Society invites applications for visiting scholars for 2018-2019.

Eligibility
Application Requirements:
  1. Applicants normally must possess a Ph.D. or J.D. (or foreign equivalent).
  2. Applicants must submit a full curriculum vitae.
  3. Applicants must submit a letter describing their proposed program of research or study, specifying the time period they wish to be in residence at the Center. Applicants must pursue a program of research or study which is of mutual interest to faculty members at the Center for the Study of Law and Society.
  4. Applicants must indicate their source of funding while visiting Berkeley, e.g. sabbatical pay, scholarship, government funding, personal funds, etc. Unfortunately, the Center cannot offer stipends or other financial assistance. Monthly minimum requirements for foreign exchange scholars are: $1600 per month for the J-1 scholar, $500 per month for the J-2 spouse, $200 per month for each J-2 child.
  5. Applicants must be proficient in English in order to benefit from CSLS programs.

In recent years, CSLS has welcomed some 25 visiting scholars annually from the U.S. and many other countries. In 2011-2012, for example, 23 visiting scholars gathered at the Center from the U.S. (9), Europe (7), Middle East (1), Mexico (1) and Asia (5).

Sponsorship duration
The Center will consider applications for periods of time that vary from one month duration to the full academic year

Scholarship benefits
Among the benefits of being a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society are:
  • library privileges at the Law School and at all campus libraries;
  • invitation to the weekly CSLS Speaker Series, workshops, and scholarly exchanges;
  • UCB campus privileges, such as athletic facilities and permission to audit classes; and,
  • when possible, assignment to shared or other office space and use of computer, internet, and other facilities.
Method of Application
Prospective scholars may apply to the program under one of two categories of visiting scholars: 1) Senior Visiting Scholars – professors, government and law professionals; 2) Visiting Researchers – Ph.D. students working under the supervision of a Berkeley Law faculty member.

The visiting scholar application process consists of three parts: 1) Law School acceptance, 2) UC Berkeley Graduate Division (VSPA) approval, and 3) Berkeley International Office approval for J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa.
