Scholarship Description
The Margaret McNamara Educational Grants (MMEG) scholarships for female students from developing countries are for young women enrolled full-time to study in the United States or Canada.

The MMEG scholarships provide grants to women from developing countries to help further their education and strengthen their leadership skills to improve the lives of women and children in developing countries. 

Applicants for the MMEG scholarships are screened by an all-volunteer, independent selection committee, and grants are awarded by the Board of Directors by April every year. However, applications start mid-September the year before.

Eligibility Criteria 
A woman is eligible to apply for an MMEG grant if she meets all the following criteria below.

General eligibility:
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Be at least 25 years old at time of application deadline (see specific regional program application below);
  • Be a national of a country listed on the MMEG Country Eligibility List;
  • Be enrolled (not just accepted) at an accredited academic institution when submitting application; and plan to be enrolled for a full academic term after award of the grant by the Board;
  • Not be related to a World Bank Group, International Monetary Fund or Inter-American Development Bank staff member or spouse;
US AND CANADA PROGRAM
In addition to the above criteria, an applicant must:
  • already be enrolled as a full time student, with relevant student visa in national passport, and plan to continue studying full time in the following academic year;
  • not hold US citizenship or permanent residency (green card) or Canadian citizenship or Canadian landed immigrant status
There are no exceptions to the MMEG Scholarship criteria listed above.

Criteria:
MMEG awards education grants on a competitive basis to exceptional women from developing countries who are enrolled as full-time students for the following academic term in accredited universities in the United States and Canada, have demonstrated financial need and are committed to working for the well-being of women and children.

Participating Institutions
Any accredited institution of higher learning in the USA and/or Canada

Sponsorship Duration
The grant is a onetime award to last for the full duration of your study

Scholarship benefits
Grants of up to US$15,000 are awarded in the US/Canada program, and US$7,000 in the Africa, Latin America and Trinity programs. Grant amounts may vary, based on exchange rates and availability of funds.

Method of Application
Remember to read the Application Checklist and the FAQs before applying, and select the "US-Canada program" in the first question of the application. If the program name does not appear, the program may be closed to new applications. Ensure to submit ALL requested documents. Only complete applications will be accepted.

DEADLINES:
Applications are accepted between September 15 - January 15. Applications for the academic year 2018/2019 is open from Friday, September 15th 2017 until Monday, January 15th, 2018

PLEASE NOTE:
The Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF) was founded in 1981 to honor the memory of Margaret Craig McNamara (1915-1981), the wife of Robert S. McNamara, President of the World Bank from 1968 to 1981. In 2005 the MMMF began exploring ways to expand its scholarship program to include study in developing country universities. Between 2007-2010, pilot grants were awarded to 15 students studying in South Africa.
